Mysteries of Aiwella

Part I

A figure in ragged robe stood on the outskirts of what was once the glorious Monastery of Aiwella. Flapping in the wind, it revealed a sturdy leather armor underneath - a necessity for tonight’s job. The sun was slowly setting behind the mountain range into which the monastery was carved. It must have been quite a sight, back it its glory days.

A cold gust of wind made him shiver, running between the seams on that reinforced tunic he was wearing underneath. Ilyas grabbed his robe and squeeze it tight along his small and frail body.

“I really don’t like this”, he muttered into the wind. He has never been much of a fighter. It was partly due to his physique, or at least that’s what he liked to tell himself. But the truth is, he always prefered to take more supportive role, be someone people turn to before they rush into their next dangerous adventure. His clientele was always changing it seems, not because he would slack at his job. It’s just the way world is nowadays, it seems. You give a man some clothing one evening and watch him burn the next day in that same shirt you gave him.

We have all heard stories, the good, and the bad. The monastery once stood there, a shining pillar of Faith before it turned into this undead-infested monstrosity that it is today. Why the Church hasn’t finished the job by burning the whole damn thing and turning every stone to dust escaped him, but here we stand. By all the strange coincidences, his path lead him here, to this Fort at monastery doorsteps.

“Ready for tonight?” a loud voice called from afar. There was no mistaking him, a mountain of a man compared to him, his voice sounded loud and clear despite the wind. The red and golden garment shinned in the evening light brightly. He often joked that even a blind man could not mistake this man for anything but a legionnaire. It was Vance’s idea to enroll Ilyas in this endeavor, a more proactive role if one can call it. Often with a sword in hand, slashing of those undead came easy to him, but someone still had to keep his vitality up and distract a mob or two in order not to get overwhelmed. Ilyas was categorically against it at first, but the ever growing threat of being overrun by those damned undead was pretty convincing in the end. Never doing much fighting of any form, this was all quite new to him, but surprisingly, they got along well. His fast blade and Ilyas’ healing remedies and distractions were keeping them busy most of the night.

“Let’s go”, he replied and in a few brief moments, the unlikely duo was already charging towards the ruins. He muttered a short mantra by the trees outside and seemingly motionless tree suddenly started to move towards the undead hordes, smashing them with its branches that looked more and more like some huge arms with each passing swing. Few snaps of fingers later and two little pixies joined fight, incinerating the reanimate corpses before them. The increased activity in the area, more apostates running loose and the sightings of the late archbishop (of those are to be believed!) called for swift and thorough cleansing of the area. It has always been the worst near the summoning circles, and this night was no exception. But as they made their way towards the old chapel, another figure appeared out of the shadows behind them. They were both surprised at first but an ouroboros on the that red leather tunic left little doubt of who she was.

“Greetings fellas”, she said loud and clear, spinning his spear in her hand. “Any special activity tonight?”. The boys look at each other with a surprise on their faces that slowly turned into relief. Her striking emerald eyes looks between them before she waved at the to follow. They stepped into the old church where apostates usually reside. In the middle of presbytery, a large pentagram, written in blood. Walking around the room, Ilyas started “It looks dormant tonight. Perhaps the hour is late already.” as the first ray of dawn shone into the church.

“Just might be, but this needs further study. There are several pentagrams in the vicinity, each with its own unique features. Observe and study.” said Emerald Eyes. “And report.”
