I was under the impression they were obsoleted in lieu of engineered skinning tools

You can use them as a weapon and still skin with them, they're useful to train swords with because of their low swing speed and damage.

This is the problem. They are an infinite skinning tool, I am under the belief that its intended that uh...they not be like that, and that the consumable skinning tool manufactured by engineers is used instead.

It is not infinite for skinning, skinning with them damages their durability as of a few patches ago.

They should be taking damage when used for skinning (well, a % of it happening) like any other weapon. The broken skinning tool is the hatchet.
