The usual trick is to have just the gold on you then purchase a cheap item and the vendor will break it for you

I wonder how much money could be made by having a vendor whose sole purpose is to sell items at 50c as a transaction fee to get change.

Speaking of, has anyone tested whether you can put money on a vendor for people to 'withdraw' from their bank? That would actually be kind of useful in remote locations.
