Legacy of Charles Winecap

Post by Jeremold » October 26th, 2021, 10:05 pm

Charles Winecap

Eyes: wide-slit light blue eyes with heavy hoods
Hair: Chestnut brown and usually cut short
Skin: Hard living has given him a rough textured skin and poor complexion
Handedness: Right handed but left hand fairly capable
Hygiene: Very lacking, far below average
Scent: Terrible body odour from constant running, with sweet-smelling breath from frequent donuts

Personality

Faction Affiliation:
Languages: common, yultish

Personality Description: A mix of greed and not caring about property. He searches the lands for more coins but he does so in order to participate in the society and help the businesses of others to thrive. He's often very charitable because he has no proper concepts of property rights. Charles grew from a boy to a man without really owning anything- at least officially. The many years he spent working to pay off his family debt were done out of a desire to be seen as having done-the-right-thing rather than out of a fear of the state or death or any such other reason.

History: Spent youth harvesting wild forage, and stealing crops from neighbouring lands. Worked as a labourer for a low-ranked family since young age to help pay off his own families debts.

From a disgraced family who succumbed to the lure of rebellion. His great uncle had been hung and flayed in public view for trying to stir up controversy in their small settlement. Winecap was once a prominent name, and the actions of one branch of the family had stained the entire tree. Winecaps across the midlands were forced to prove their loyalty by helping to gather information about other dissenters against the republic.

The horse-ride to Fort Prae had been exhilarating. Charles immediately began spending and buying, trying to understand the local markets. He laboured and established a small shop in a rented Foundry space. Things went well for a week and then business dried up. Several locals advised Charles to take up arms and visit one of the local graveyard sites to bash the recently-revived corpses for their copper coins. This idea appealed to Charles, but he had next to no skill in anything but the simplest of fist-fights.

He had grown up a bit of a loner, never received any proper combat training of any type, and had been barred from holding knives, sticks, swords, or anything of the sort that wasn't strictly meant for his tasks.

---

Image

Business had been slow to start. The locals were plenty hospitable, but everyone had customer loyalties already established with other vendors in the area. Finding himself in a desperate spot nearly out of coins for his newly established shop, Charles struck luck while chatting with the boarding house keeper. For an upfront payment of ten silvers, Charles was requested to gather ten good quality onion seeds.

---

Image

The hospitality from the local people was astounding.
---

Image

It took a lot of searching, and some scuffles with rabbits and deer, but Charles managed to gather and deposit the seeds over some weeks.

The silvers had been enough to facilitate the move of the shop from the Fort Prae area to the small settlement of Brightlantern, where Charles began an exploratory mining operation with the goal of creating an underground route towards Fort Prae to allow safe trade between the locations.

---

A mining operation in the area near Brightlantern had proven very successful in gathering materials, gems, and metals. None of these things had managed to put coins into Charles' pockets.

The mine currently lays unclaimed as Charles abandoned the operations upon meeting Gretchin creatures deep within.

Image

He stakes a small claim near the refugee camp in an attempt at charitable food production.

He encounters some large cats traveling near the road at night, and does his best to flee unsuccessfully. Left for dead by a spotted leopard, Charles vows to get his revenge and kill the pair of leopards that attacked him, somehow.

He had succeeded in escaping dozens of times in his short time in the province, but there's always something faster than you. Recuperating from his wounds gave Charles time to consider becoming a person who can defend themselves in combat rather than always avoiding it.

---

Image

A kind person named Gryhun had surprisingly given a key to his mining shaft and tool house to Charles. The mine was safe and enjoyable to work in, despite being sometimes a bit too active for Charles' tastes. The thrill of mining wearing nothing but gloves and boots had been something Charles recently began to enjoy, and he remains concerned that others will not enjoy finding him working like that.

Some kind of strange dolls are affixed to many structures, and no one seems to know why.

Charles spends several weeks collecting ingredients and delving into the basics of Pyrotechnics. He crafts himself many successful devices without losing any fingers to explosion. He quickly understands the potential power of the craft as well as the potential in coins to be gained by selling the precious materials required.

---

Image

After meeting with some battle-capable people, Charles is shown the basics of Aiwella Monastery. He knows the simplest of rules for sword-fighting, how to not stab yourself for the most part. Armed with barely two days of practice with a bladed weapon, he follows the seasoned warriors to one of the most terrifying places he has ever seen in his life.

---

Image

His time spent skinning wild animals for their eyeballs and bones had given him a morbid curiosity for blood. For some few weeks he explored into the science of Hematology with what he could learn from speaking with amateurs around Prae.

One day, Charles finds his stash of medical syringes and Hematology kit has been taken.

Charles is generally a mediocre engineer, and the quality of his work likely led to the easy theft. Never could get the door to close because he didn't bother to build on even ground.

Feeling a general frustration with himself, and not the loss of the property, Charles begins to wield his weapon with anger to see how that fares for him.

A strange but overall friendly person named Avenicci assists Charles by showing him some other places where the coins can be recovered from the reviving corpses.

Charles uses his willingness to travel and ability with basic weaponry to amass some wealth.

It's important to give back when you have the ability to do so. A small feast at Miltown marked the 'holiday' season.

The joy of naked mining had been an amazing feeling! Charles reveled in the freedom of movement and lack of itching from his pants. Eventually he would come to realize it was not nudity that he loved so dearly, but poorly made clothing of poor cloth that he despised greatly! It was only through the purchase of many fine pieces of clothing that he came to understand, and the road to becoming a 'tailor' had begun.

Unknown forces cause the collapse of the once-sturdy 'Backlands Commoner's Hall', Charles gathers what few pieces survive from the rubble. With some care he reassembles many of the available workbenches. He soon finds himself able to run the design shop that he never knew he had wanted to run.

Image

Using the design shop Charles begins working on warm clothing designs for the winter. He purchases fur from local shopkeeps, and scours the lands for schematics with any relation to fur or warmth.

He begins to collect a large crate of warm clothing to be sent to the refugee camp in case of extreme weather, while also designing a seasonally-aware, fashionably coloured, exquisite quality wardrobe for himself.

Image

---

Over time Charles expands his small area, building a workshed he is able to fit several more recovered toolbenches inside.

Image

---

One of his finest early works, a carefully constructed dress as it is one of his very first few attempts at making a dress. Filling the simple order to craft a dress would remind him how much he had loved the midlander kilts him and his friends wore as young boys.

While gathering some spending money in Aiwella Charles meets the man who crafted the fine steel pistol that Charles has been using for quite some time. This is proven after Charles very reluctantly hands the pistol to the friendly man for examination. Barney he had introduced himself as, was quite proud and pleased with his work being used successfully in the field. He showed Charles the small maker's mark, offered to repair the pistol, and explained briefly the potentials of augmentation.

What a dumb joke from Charles. The woman had not responded very well. As Charles examined the body the scene of the market came flooding back to his mind. The sword, the woman, there she lay now in Aiwella fields, dead.

An investigation involving several do-gooder citizens leads to the proper send-off.

Charles remains convinced that the events that unfolded were an elaborate curse to destroy the food supply and attack the quality of the field soil. He begins construction of a sturdy building using all the ability he has acquired.

Winecap House adorned with gems, field beside actively growing, and vegetable stand with it's free veggies. It had been some months of work, but Charles toiled day and night, stopping only to rest or work on designs.

Charles improvement on the common 'forge stove' utilizes a heater shield to more evenly disperse the heat.

Doing some tailoring business.

---

Image

Many masterpiece works are crafted in the Winecap Design Studio. The beautiful view of the water, the smell of nearby industry from the Foundry HQ, the woods and the birds all worked together to create a wonderful atmosphere for designing functional clothing. Charles found himself occasionally making a nice, soft piece of something, but more often than not the work produced in the tower was strong fighting-clothing, or durable workers-clothing.

---

Image

Charles stops to cleanup some animal bones that the Fort workers are refusing to deal with. The guards grow more bored by the day, having slept with all the bathhouse workers and drank in all the taverns by their second month on the job, the conscripts find themselves running out of activities to engage in.

Charles reconsiders his plans to work with the local theatre, and is then reminded of his plan to build a small flourmill at the refugee camp. He heads out to the refugee camp, armed with an empty book and a feather-pen. Once there he spends some time speaking with the refugees and guards while jotting notes to write a short book which he decides on the journey there he will call 'Barriers to Success'.

The experience is one that changes him somewhat, causing him to decide to abandon his tower and set up a new home in the nearby area.

Winecap house the second. From here Charles begins work on his springtime fashion clothing. The midlander kilts are produced in vast quantities and distributed around the province over time, beginning with the refugees and forest folk before spreading into the Fort Prae area. Charles continues to craft and distribute midlander-style kilts, shoving them into crates and boxes or placing them directly into people's hands before walking away briskly.

Charles begins writing down more of his 'plans', with the intent of meeting up with the many investors he has spoken with in the Fort Prae area to see them come to fruition.
