Dev Journal / Fireside Chats with Sic: Vol. IV

Greetings Requiemites. As we sit upon the precipice of entering the First Province for Act VI, I would like to share with you the last of our major character changes for the new shard. As we have ventured into opening our community up to a larger and more diverse player base, we have made significant changes to our perma-death polices and mechanics as to make our shard more appealing to more players while keeping the essence of what Requiem is all about.

Providence Changes

Providence, the currency of divine (or forsaken?) favor remains a game mechanic for Act VI. Where it was previously used solely as a reincarnation buff allowing you to reincarnate with more Invested Animus than you would normally, it has been expanded for a greater gameplay experience.

Providence, of which you are given a single point of during character creation/re-roll, is now used in the following situations:

- In the event of a PVP-PD situation that would otherwise be successful.
- In the event of a PVM-PD situation Mortality roll failure.

Upon the PVP-PD of your character, if you possess a point of Providence, your character will be spared the throes of death and you shall survive to live and die another day. This will further result in normal PVP protection rules (immunity for 24 hours). Upon the expiration of the 24 hours, your character will be then vulnerable to all forms of PD – be it PVP inflicted or Mortality inflicted.

Upon the PVM-PD of your character, if you possess a point of Providence, your character will also be spared a death roll. You will receive no additional bonuses or boons, and you will be just as likely to PD from PVM due to your Mortality rolls on the next KO.

Lost Providence can be regained at a rate of one point for every approximately one hundred in-game, logged-in hours. This can experience a small boost if this time is spent in Sanctuary areas. You can only have one point of Providence at any time. There is no way to know when and if your opponent has a point of Providence, and the Providence value is not tracked in the Codex.

Staff can still assist your character in experiencing a perma-death with no cost of Providence. By going this route, you can effectively still use the Reincarnation mechanics as you did in Act V, and use your Providence to reincarnate with 100% of your Invested Animus.

These changes have been put into place as to help avoid hastily planned PD situations and to extend conflict and strife beyond a single encounter. We hope that players continue to treat the PDing of another character with the reverence that it deserves, and we hope these changes help to make Requiem more engaging, accessible, and more alluring to both new and old players alike.

PD Protection Changes

Two key features have been added to the game-world involving where and how you can engage in a PVP-PD situation.

First off, we have bestowed upon all freshly created characters a two-week PD immunity timer. This timer runs in real-time, regardless of online status or not, and will display how much time is left upon login post-arrival at Fort Praesidium. Additionally, characters who have this protection cannot PD other characters either. This change has been added to keep newly created characters from performing an action they may not understand the ramifications of as well as keeping freshly made characters from being murdered within their first few weeks of creation.

Our second change is the addition of a PVP-PD protection buff added into Sanctuary zones. Sanctuary zones are extremely rare areas (Fort Prae for instance) that bestow additional Grit and Regen bonuses when present within. Additionally, PVP-PDs can no longer be performed inside Sanctuary zones by players. This new dynamic has been put into place as to give players a neutral zone to be able to RP in as well as to be able to idle/go AFK in without fear of PD.

Mortality Changes

Mortality now expires at one point per five in-game, logged-in hours. This can experience a small boost if this time is spent in Sanctuary areas. Mortality is now more prevalent in-game, as more mobs now can inflict it, so take care.

Summary

These compiled changes have been the result of many weeks and months of brainstorming, deliberation, and debate amongst the staff of Requiem. We have implemented them with the intentions of attracting and retaining more players than we have previously supported in prior Acts. The amount of work and time put into this project is immense, and the staff wishes as much as the community to see it grow, thrive, and flourish.

We hope that our veteran players help carry the banner for these changes and look upon them as positive additions to our project. Remember, there are numerous new players looking to your lead in our community.

Thank you, and see you in the First Province soon!
