XVII, or the seventeenth

Long ago ran the sun on a folk who had a dream, and the heart and the will and the power.

What was done beneath our shade? What was prayed beneath our skies?

Still we loom in the mists, as the ages roll away. And we say to our folk;

“we are here.”

Basics & Logistics
1. Have you read all of the prerequisites and considerations and do you agree to abide by them?
Yes.

2. What is the name of your intended Faction?
XVII, or the seventeenth. A reference to Verse Seventeen and the soul of the Faction.
“The war may have ended in Heaven and Hel…”

3. What is the expected or intended size of the Faction in terms of player characters?
I have six players right now, and while I don't really want a big 10-person army, I am expecting interest and won't turn down good RP for an arbitrary number. 6-9?

4. What is the expected or intended size of the Faction in terms of its’ lore concept, and/or including NPCs?
We are really only a squad; a handful of individuals. If the faction grows to include NPCs, they would likely be laity, guards, archaeologists and scribes, or other drifting souls who believe in our quest or can no longer turn away from what they've learned.

5. Roleplaying wise, how influential will the Faction strive to be? Will it tend to stick to itself and not make waves, or will it try and become a household name? How will the Faction accomplish this level (or lack thereof) of influence and reputation?
The XVII isn't after worldly wealth or political power. We won't expressly try to become famous at all, but if we do our duty well, perhaps we become synonymous with Decusian lore, the plight of our people and the road to Ascension.

6. Does the Faction have any unique colors, sigils, banners, or signage that uniquely identifies it? What is the significance of it?
The squad has adopted as a signifier a somber, almost simplified depiction of the Decusian Beatus Vultus, recognizable by every Templar cadet and others besides, as even after all this time it represents the heart of the mission:
The sword of righteousness, which all Decusians must become some time in their lives, pointing towards the rising sun and the splendor of Heaven. The shield of faith, bearing upon it the number of Sacred Eight, and the Principatus phrase of “Intus lux lucis ingredior upilio opilio hominum”, translated simply as “In light walk the shepherds of men”.

Goals & Future
1. What purpose, direction or goal does the Faction have in the world at large?
Oh, you know, only salvation. Likely unheard of, unless we do something wild. I think the fact that the First Coast is a place of buried Decusian history and its ancient nightmares come to life again, is precisely why it comes into being here and not in Redholme.

2. What purpose, direction or goal does the Faction have within the quarantined First Province in particular?
Grimdark Templar angst. Every character is Decusian with different takes on aspects of the faith, but each has seen and experienced too much to ever seek out a quiet life. We are ex-Templar, ex-Clergy or simply refugees who have, through some trial or tribulation, learned that there is only one true war and mean to do their part in it, on the side of the Eight. In essence, we are aware that the Resolve knows this world better than we do, but perhaps that disparity can be shrunk.

The faction isn't meant to be a return to the Church as a faction, but rather occupies itself with the questions that haunt a Templar's nightmares: Where did we come from? Why did we send everything we had to MacArthur’s Gate, and why is it named that? Where is Temple, and is Decus still there? Who or what manned the walls of Nora Thryn? At what point did our ancestors lose their way? Was the Decusian landfall truly just the expansion of an empire? Can we retrace the steps of the Avatara? Has the Resolve found their tombs? What was under Rerosin's Cathedral? If the Doctrine is real and on Vitaveus, where is it? What has become of the Lucerna Obscura, and do we care?

Several of our number are comfortable in old roles and are sure to tend to the faith of anyone who wishes it; you can expect us to deliver both history and sermon, to take confession, and to spread prayer and literature, if perhaps a touch fire and brimstone.

3. Role-playing wise, what would the Faction seek to accomplish within the next six to twelve months? What are their immediate and long-term goals?
Establish some intra-squad camaraderie, first of all, since a lot of this recruitment was OOC. A base of operations, ideally in the fort but realistically probably a claim out in the world. Explore one another’s take on the faith and the history of our people. Philosophize. Tend to the faith and combat the influence of the Thrones, even if we’re not in the colors. With staff assistance, we would combat Orda and others who do the Resolve’s bidding, and launch expeditions to recover Decusian lore and learn how to undermine an enemy who seeks the extinction of our people.

4. Is the Faction famous or infamous for anything in particular? Will it strive to be famous or infamous for anything in the near future?
It won’t strive for fame, no. If it happens, it will be because we did dope things.

Concept & Community
1. Please provide the Discord handle of the intended Player Leader of this Faction that will serve to liaison with the Staff in the future:
Auri#2356
In my absence, Falco.

2. Please provide a summary as to the out-of-character purpose of the Faction, what sort of role you feel it will fill in-game (trading guild, PVP, PVM, etc.), and what sort of player character you intend to attract and/or support with the Faction in general.
Roleplay: a deep-dive into Decusian lore, popular and obscure, and a clear focus on the metaplot, in whatever manner our limited understanding allows.

New recruits would likely be more ex-Church castes, or other refugees who are beginning to believe, and can help the mission or be taught to help the mission. We can’t make you a Templar, but you don’t need to be.

Recruits must have at least a passing appreciation for symphonic metal.

1. If you have anything additional you would like to publicly share with us, to include in-character write ups, descriptions, organization structures or even custom logos and sigils, please provide them here:

Real Name: Caius Artorius Seneca
D.O.B: 29th of Goldleaf,1307
P.O.B: Kedian, Eastern Baronies.
Height: 6’2
Weight: 217+-

Biography: Caius Artorius was born in the Eastern Baronies in 1307 the youngest son of the once well-distinguished Seneca family; whom, though wealthy by the standards of the low-born masses, had lost most of their influence in the First Coast by the time young Caius was able to walk. Caius is the sole-surviving son of Aurelius and Laelia – all of whom had gone on to serve in various stations of the Republic before meeting their inevitable fate at the hands of war, famine, or disease in hopes of returning the Seneca family back to their former glory.

As a child of a privileged family, there came an education, a love for poetry and music, an interest in history, and of course, martial training under the best sword-bearers that his family could afford (which was not much by the time Caius was born.) That tutelage fell primarily to his (now deceased) uncle Titus, from whom he learned much of the skills that served him in his early adult life. In these formative years, Titus brought Caius on his first pilgrimage to Prelate’s Peak, where he could witness the Monastery of the Divine Enlightenment from afar.

XVII: Caius arrived in the First Province with a number of disgraced Templar from his former chapter, the 307th "Spiritus Vastatores" Chapter -- colloquially refered to as the Sons of Solurien with the intent to discover a path of legitimacy and recognition during the course of the reclamation; however, the loss of Dytryk Shakhovskoy, the brotherhood began to fracture. Caius blamed himself for Ryk's death, and strove to keep them together, only to watch as his brethren faded away, one by one. Caius was lost -- until banners of the "XVII" began to unfurl in the hearts and minds of fellow Decusians. Once again, Caius pressed into the flames, seeking truth in the history of his ancestors.

Real Name: Niamh “Knives” Valfear
D.O.B: 28th of Icereign, 1323
P.O.B: Keluben, Eastern Baronies.
Height: 5’8
Weight: 125+-

Biography: A contradictory and conflicted figure, Niamh is a Torian choir girl, taught by and lifted from life in the slums by the Clergy. She was one of the last members of the Ordo Madriga, as the fall of Tor strikes them from the pages of history. She beat the odds, surviving on the road, largely thanks to her older and more savvy childhood friend, Mote.

Being unable to leave the First Province, Niamh became a member of the 23rd Chapter of the Decusian Templarate, and would go on to serve the 901st, Ancora Penitent, and the 109th, the Knights Hospitaller, as well as the Eighth Legion.

She was entrusted with a rare Decusian writ of divination by the Commandant of the 109th Templar, and was taught ancient Inquisitorial rites by the VIC’s Republic splinter factions. Unearthing ancient urns of saintly ashes from Vaults dating to the Reckoning, she put the rites into practise, exorcising the shadow of a Daemon from a Consortium mage. The strain of the rite leaves her with lifelong wracking pains.

XVII: Adrift and facing life without Chapter or congregation, Niamh meets Caius Artorius Seneca and resolves to rekindle her own fire, and the fires of faith around her. Turning her eyes again to the soil of the First Coast and the steps of her people, she names this fledgling movement after the verse that drove the Templar; verse seventeen.

Real Name: Nee Starly (Has recently taken Pirouette as a middle name)
A.K.A.: Mote
D.O.B: 16th of Highharvest, 1321
P.O.B: Keluben, Eastern Baronies.
Height: 5’1
Weight: 98lb+-

Biography: A childhood friend of and ever-present roommate to the hapless Niamh 'Knives' Valfear. Once a thug and thief in the slums of Tor, she has since become a skilled warrior and alchemist.

She has never done much of note, herself, beyond providing support to Knives and others, and surviving where so many have fallen. Over the years, she has fought back torment time and time again, volunteering shoulder to shoulder with Legion gold.

More recently, she has begun to write for the Frontier Herald, and though she enjoys it, she finds it unfulfilling, especially when she finds she must censor certain topics.

XVII: Lacking a real purpose or goal, she accompanies Knives on her latest venture. However, like her semi-employer Jeane Harlow, Mote has always had a desire to find the truth and reveal it, regardless of what it takes. She fills the role of chronicler; documenting discoveries and developments, eager to make a name but also to ensure truthfulness in the accounting. Mote never took to the faith quite like Niamh did, but has seen too much to be cynical. She idealizes the Eight, and Niamh has joked on more than one occasion that she'll make a Templar yet.

Real Name: Augustus Acellus
D.O.B: 24th of Flowerbloom, 1303
P.O.B: Redholme
Height: 5'-11”
Weight: 122 lbs

Biography: Born in Redholme City but lacking the wealth and connections for politics or the intellect for academia, Augustus joins a Legion recruiting party the day he comes of age. He shows a natural aptitude for leatherwork and after training is assigned the rank of Immunes and attached to the 8th Legio

Sent to the First Provence as part of a labor detachment he soon learns that there are never enough guards, and each day he watches as one by one his unit disappears or deserts. During an assault on their outpost, he and its four remaining members are overwhelmed and find themselves captured by savages. They endure weeks of starvation and abuse before Augustus and one other survivor are traded to a passing group of cultists.

En route to the cultist camp, they cross paths with a Legion patrol and are rescued after a short and brutal fight. Suffering from infected wounds and near to starvation the pair are send to a rest camp in the Rumbling Pass. Nearly a year later, Augustus convinces the camp physician that he has recovered enough to return to the Quarantine area. If he can no longer serve the Legion, perhaps he can at least search for other survivors from his unit and maybe put the horrors of his recent past behind him.

XVII: Not nearly as recovered as he initially thought, Augustus still carries the mental and physical scars of his abuse. Hoping to find some sort of fulfillment from life, he begins living with the refugees outside the fort, hunting and gathering food to aid their survival. While waiting for the sun to rise on one such foray, he encounters Miss Mote, who suggests that he may be of use to a group of surviving faithful who seek to improve themselves and the lives of those around them.
