Faction Application: Prerequisites and Considerations

Post by Sic » February 9th, 2021, 3:06 pm

In the game-world of Requiem, we have placed significant effort into fostering an environment where both story and mechanics come together to help support our players in their role playing endeavors. One of the main examples of this design philosophy is that of the Requiem Faction System.

Factions take the place of guilds and organizations of any sort within the world and setting of our story. Mechanically, Factions serve to help players customize various aspects of their organizations, present players with in-game strategic goals and content and allow players to come together in groups to help make their mark on the world at large.

Due to the significant impact Factions can have in our game world, we require players to apply for a Faction before being able to take part in the mechanical system in-game. Upon approval of a Faction application, a staff member will be assigned as an official liaison to the Faction and will assist the defined Faction Leader in setting the Faction up in game.

The prerequisites and considerations to applying for a Faction in Requiem are as follows:

1) You must have a minimum of five player characters (not accounts) total in order to found and apply for a Faction. Each character must be played by a separate player. Mechanically, characters can only be in one Faction at a time, however we do allow for players to have their secondary and tertiary characters in different Factions if they so choose to do so. Players cannot have multiple characters of their own account within the same Faction as this is in violation of our shard Muling rule.

2) A Faction will be limited to fifteen total characters at this time. This prerequisite will be lifted post-launch if deemed unnecessarily restrictive.

3) You must have one player to have leadership-level in-game privileges (reputation level 10) of whom will serve as the Faction’s player liaison to the staff. This person must be willing to use Discord and must be willing to have their Discord handle added to the Player Leader group. While preferred, this person does not necessarily have to be the “in-character” supreme leader of the organization but must mechanically have leadership power and must have the authority to make decisions and execute actions on behalf of the Faction out of character as well.

4) As a Player Leader, a prerequisite of applying for a Faction is acknowledging that you are responsible for making sure that the players involved in your Faction adhere to community standards for respect and decorum. Furthermore, you acknowledge that players within your Faction will direct concerns and issues they may have to you, the Player Leader, in so that efficient communication can be maintained between the staff and the Faction.

5) As a Player Leader, a prerequisite of applying for a Faction is acknowledging that you are responsible for holding at least one in-game event a month. These events are preferred to be public events that spurn in-game activity and role-playing opportunities. Depending on the size and scope of the Faction, exceptions to this rule or additional requirements may be made.

6) The idea or theme of the Faction you are applying for cannot replace or stand in lieu of an official story Faction or serve as the official “authority” of a story element. For example, you may not apply to be The Church, the Consortium, or the Venerated Inquisition. These story elements have a place in the lore and are operated by the staff. Furthermore, you cannot apply to represent the Church or Consortium as the sole official representation in the First Province, IE: maintain to be the equivalent or greater authority than the story-element. As a critical exception to this rule, depending on the player-leader’s familiarity with the shard lore and history, applications for Factions of which are related to the main story elements of the shard may be considered – these include such things as the creation of a specific Church Templar Chapter, for example.

7) By definition, a Faction is a group or clique within a larger group, party, government, organization, or the like, typically having different opinions and interests than the larger group. By rights, a Faction may take the form of any organization or group that you may have in mind, to include anything from a Blacksmithing Guild to a Mercenary Company to new political order. Thus, a prerequisite to applying for a Faction is that players attempt to be as unique and creative as possible, and not to feel pressured into coming up with a concept that is beholden to having to be involved in military conquest, political intrigue, or world domination. There is plenty of room in the First Province for all sorts of groups, and the Faction system can accommodate everything from a baker’s guild to a marauding army.

8) The First Province is a Quarantine Zone, and only the most powerful and influential Factions in the world of Eden have the ability and resources to circumvent the blockades and reliably interact with the world outside. Player characters from around the world have come to the First Province for a myriad of reasons but do so knowing that escape from the Zone is extremely difficult, if not impossible to leave without considerable difficulty and risk. With this said, please design your Faction concept with the idea in that it would take considerable effort to contact those outside of the Zone or move supplies in and out of the First Province. The staff will of course evaluate this point on a case-by-case basis in the event a Faction is applied for with a theme that is focused upon this story element.

9) Applications are encouraged and highly favored to be public, as approved Factions will be added to the website. Exceptions to this rule will only be made in rare circumstances and only through admin approval – please send a PM to Sic in Discord if you feel as though you must qualify for this exception.

10) There is no monetary cost associated with staring up a Faction in-game.
