Aloric Thayne (tertiary) app

Post by Aloric Thayne » January 10th, 2019, 1:53 pm

Do you have any prior experience with Requiem? If so, please detail when (and what characters, if desired) you previously played: I've played many different acts of Requiem. Ulraunt

Briefly summarize your prior role-playing experience in a sentence or two:
Why do you wish to play on Requiem, and what do you expect from the shard? The quality RP shard it's always been

What will your character’s name be?: Aloric Thayne

Please briefly describe the physical attributes of your character, including age, looks, height, weight and any notable features:
Aloric is an average looking man, standing at 5 feet 9 inches and weighing in at around 160 lbs. He has short brown hair, slicked back with no facial hair or markings on his plain looking face. You might even mistake him for decent looking if his hazel eyes were proportional, and his nose not crooked to the left, then to the right, obviously having been broken several times. His age is hard to place, his hair line isn't receding and your best guess would be in his thirties...but he could be younger...or older...it's really hard to tell.

Briefly state your character’s intentions or motivations for entering the First Province:
The same reason everyone is, except they aren't willing to admit it to themselves or others. Money. There is silver available to those who know how to get it.

Briefly provide a pertinent detail or notable quality of your character’s history (this does not have to be exhaustive nor revealing of any information you wish to keep secret):
Aloric has made his living by being just another face in the crowd. Blending into the crowd and staying out of harm's way. Being the center of attention or aspiring to be some sort of hero is what usually brings about an early death and trouble. He grew up on the streets of Tor, begging, fighting and stealing to keep himself alive in the Slums District. It was a hard life, and hard lifes breed hard men...or careful ones. He was most certainly the later...much preferring some charismatic charm and witty humor to defuse a situation then to go in "guns blazing" sort to speak. That being said, if diplomacy does not work, as it doesn't always...there are other ends to a means that while others would consider dastardly or perhaps dishonorable...would get the job done. He was not above doing what it took to survive in the past, and who isn't? Those who don't stoop to the levels needed to survive either don't survive...or haven't been in that situation yet to see just how far they'd go.

That's how he escaped Tor when it fell. Not being in the fighting lines, and being one of the first to tuck tail and run isn't what gets you sung of in the tavern...but it gets you to the tavern yourself to enjoy your life. Fuck the rest of that stuff. He was no warrior and never intended to be, unless, of course, there was enough profit in it and enough reduction of risk. Everyone has a price to do anything...you just need to know that price.

Briefly write an in-character response to the following scenario:

You have finally arrived at your destination; the Rumbling Pass checkpoint. Before you stands a massive outpost, looking to have been erected only recently, of which is patrolled by numerous Legionnaires and Church Templar. The outpost guards the only viable entrance to the recently quarantined First Province; the home of Tor, the fallen capital of the Republic. Sitting at the foot of the massive mountain line that effectively contains the First Province within, the outpost serves as the last obstacle you must overcome before gaining entry into the quarantined territory. You and others like you assemble outside of the palisades of the outpost, awaiting the opportunity to speak your case to the presiding Legion officiant who is processing admittance to the Province.

You watch as but a scant few of the dozens that approach the officiant, whom stands at the outer gates of the outpost flanked by a few heavily armored Legionnaires, are actually allowed to pass through the man-door and into the outpost. You see some slip pieces of gold to the officiant, while others plead their cases and rationale as to why they should be allowed to enter the recently fallen territory. Some appear to provide some sort of paperwork to the officiant, whom promptly waves them through. While eavesdropping, you manage to overhear the well-rehearsed speech the officiant provides to those whom don’t provide paperwork or grease his palm.

“By decree of the Venerated Church, the First Province is considered to be a mortal health hazard, and as such, is quarantined under Article Eighteen of the Republic Treatise of Health Act of 1320. Citizens who do not possess a Quarantine Visa issued by one of the recognized Factions of the Republic are considered non-essential to the reclamation of the First Province. Under Article Eighteen, non-essentials seeking entry into an official quarantine zone must petition for entry into a said zone, and state just cause for the issuing of a visa by the perimeter authority. State your business and make it good, citizen; we’ve enough bodies in there to keep us busy for months without adding yours to the pile.”

You ponder the situation for a moment, evaluating your options. It’s well known that with the right connections and the right amount of coin, one can get their hands on a Quarantine Visa from any one of the major Factions of the Republic, or even a passable counterfeit from more nefarious sources. At the same time, it would appear that the officiant doesn’t appear to be above some simple bribery. However, you’re sure that some of those let in appeared to have made a convincing case with the officiant. Gathering your wits, you make your decision as to how to gain access to the First Province.

Watching from the back of the line, Aloric takes note of the bribe and looks down to his own coinpurse, securely tucked inside the front of his tunic below the waist. Ain't many thieves willing to put their hand there for it. Ain't many anyone willing to honestly. He grimaced at the thought. When was the last time he had been with a woman? Been way too long, not many of them out on the road, and he sure didn't have the extra coin for brothels. Dangerous places those could be, and expensive. Especially during these times. You were more likely to get your throat slit and your coins taken than any service of real merit. Ahh well.

Taking out a small paper with some rolled "herbs" he lights it with his flint and steel, puffing on the aromatic vapors and pulling the smoke deep into his lungs. Holding his breath, he looks to see how much further in line. 3 ahead of him...perfect. Taking out 5 silver coins, and another one of his rolled herbs, he continues to puff on it as he waits, trying to blow smoke rings unsuccessfully. By the time he got a half decent one, it was his turn.

Stepping up to the same guard who had taken the bribe from earlier, he bows deeply, quickly grasping the guard's free hand with his not so empty one and giving it a firm shake, looking through the man's helm to make sure he realizes what he's handing him. Clearly the guard felt the objects handed to him via the handshake as he didn't mention it, and looked down briefly once Aloric released it.

"I am a man of humble means, with enough to care for myself. I will be no burden to your precious resources here sir...in fact you mind find that letting me in would be quite...profitable." Aloric grinned to the man, standing up from his bow and awaiting the nod to let him through
