Crows Crossing

Post by pTxing » February 11th, 2019, 3:15 pm

LETTER TO GALRYTH, ARCHITECTI
(page 1)

I write with great excitement and trust you are well upon receipt of this letter and annexed preliminary drawings for Crow's Crossing. I trust the enclosed to be of your approval, but if not, do let me know of any modifications you may require.

It might look a little too lengthy and even considered overpowered but it is my reasoning that there should be some serious thinking into the potential for later bridge enhancements - strengthening its foundations to allow for increased load and counter load performance, so that it can be suited for increased defensive purposes, such as, but not limited to - a draw bridge, a tower, and so on, if so needed in the future. This should influence the bridge design and foundations requirements from the very start.

Nevertheless, the first stage should aim for a simplified engineering achievement, one that can answer in short time the present needs, this is, a stable connection to the south lands of Tenebrae, North of Briarwood Haven, and suitable for expansion.

Taking into consideration the following:
a) For proper shored foundations, these should be set back at least 1UOT (Unrecognised Ordnance Translation 1UOT = 1 Ultima Online tile) from the river edge - SEE DRAWING A, to reach for a deep and stable ground level, away from the river, thus minimising to a great extent any river ground movement that could affect the foundations.

b) A true South-North direction bridge will cross the river at a slight angle, not perpendicular to it. This means that the distance between the two land foundations will then measure 19UOT - SEE DRAWING B. This number needs future confirmation as I could only guess this by true sight, which may well be imprecise. This number will be measured accurately early on, as explained in page #2 of this letter. Nevertheless I have allowed for an increased span of +4UOT to the timber structure that will sustain the bridge table walking planks.

c) A span of 19 (or higher for that matter) will not be possible without a mid point support, hence the need for two large timber pillars, rope tightened - so the bridge can be split in the middle, resting on this reinforced pier - SEE DRAWING C. This would allow in the future for the incorporation of a draw bridge mechanism from both sides (or just one side initially). This mid support point measures 9 to each land foundation (subject to accurate site measurements), meaning two wooden reinforced planks floor structure of size 9X4 would be liftable, subject to foundation reinforcement in depth and area size, and lifting operating device, in a future draw bridge design.

d) The need for a gate is included in the design - SEE DRAWING D, but I must underline the fact that a gate alone, without being part of a reinforced walled structure, and suitable pits, is only a small obstacle to the agile acrobat that will easily leap over from the side. That said, a gate will surely stop those affected by the Torment, dim witted as they may be.

e) The recommendation for a 2UOT width to the walkable portion of the bridge, I am assuming naturally that there is an additional 1UOT to each side for edge protection, totalling a 4UOT wide bridge - as per attached drawings.

LETTER TO GALRYTH, ARCHITECTI
(page 2)

With the above in mind, I propose the following action points and number of resources and expertise required to achieve a simple but robust wooden bridge, elevated +2 from ground level, supported by a) two stone masonry walls - in turn bedded in deep seated stone foundations - and b) a mid support timber double pier, also deep seated in stone foundations mid river.

Action point #1 Provisional barrel, rope and plank bridge, well tight to the shores, connecting both sides - SEE DRAWING C. This will enable for accurate measurements of shore to shore distance and lowest bed river depth and sign-off of preliminary structural calculations and details.

Action point #2 Land stone masonry foundations x2, well shored with reinforced timber sacrificial boards for safe digging, to a depth (subject to confirmation) no less than the calculated in DRAWINGS A & B, stone foundations sat on well compacted hardcore above stable ground. Stone masonry walls to a minimum height of +2 from ground level.

Action point #3 Reinforced timber planks 'box' structure 4 x 4 UOT and +4 higher than the lowest river bed point, carried from the shore to the river, to serve as a 'tanking box', sunk mid river, allowing for water to be extracted out, thus giving room for excavation and deep bedding of mid support pier foundations, final structural calculations and details sign off at this point - SEE DRAWING C.

Action point #4 Insertion of mid support double pier
in place and horizontal support above, well fixed with timber to timber connectors, to receive bridge table structure - SEE DRAWING C. Removal of 'tanking box'.

Action point #5 Construction of bridge table structure, to the dimensions shown. Truss reinforcement details also enclosed, SEE DRAWING D. Construction of stone steps. Construction of timber edge protection. Construction of iron cast gate.

Resources following.

40 logs for 10 posts [4 logs each]

Barrels
144 logs and 144 ingots for 48 barrels ((19lenght - 4 [2shore tiles each side]) x 4 [bridge width]) - (4 x 3)[tanking box space]; 1 Barrel = 3 Barrel Staves (Each 3 ingots) + 3 Barrel Hoops (Each 3 logs)

Ropes
15 ropes (10 ropes to cover 95 Lenght (19lenght x 5) + 5 ropes for strenghtening the 'tanking box' space); each rope able to cover 10UOT?

144 logs for 144 boards (48 x 3 [boards per barrel position])

TOTALS #1: 328 logs, 144 ingots, 15 ropes

------Resources needed in Action point #2:

Sacrificial boards for shoring up
192 logs for 192 boards (16 [foundation perimeter] x 2 [shores] x 6 [depth to be confirmed]).

Stone masonry foundation
32 shaped stones for 32 foundations masonry blocks (8 [foundation area] x 2 [shores] x 2 [depth to be confirmed]), each foundation block being 1 shaped stones.

Re: Crows Crossing

Post by Galryth Winterborn » February 11th, 2019, 7:46 pm

Standing at the shores of the river, Galryth looks over the stack of paperwork delivered to him, eyebrows raised as he reads over the precise plans of the project. Thinking he knew about planning and building himself, he was taken aback, to say the least, to have such a thorough plan presented to him. Taking a spyglass out, he peers through it, checking the distance to the banks at the other side, then down at the corresponding schematics. Dead on.

He paced the river bank, stamping down hard with his foot, checking the structural integrity of the land below his feet and nodded with satisfaction. Setting the papers down, he picks a shovel up from the ground, taking up a part of the earth where the foundation would be setting and peers at it. Regular dirt with clay underneath, a good sign indeed. If it had too much sand it would sink even with a proper foundation.

Nodding once more and pursing his lips as he finishes reading over the drawings, he rolls them up, puts them in his pack and makes his way back into their building complex.

"Hildwulf,

Your plans are extremely easy to comprehend and expertly prepared. I've checked over the measurements that you propose as well as the material list and find there to be no error. I applaud your timely and extremely efficient rendering of the plans for this project and commend the work you have provided for it. I agree to the design both for present needs and the ability to potentially add on to later to address future ones. You should be proud of the work you've done on this. I look forward to building this with you and everyone else."

Kind Regards,
Galryth Winterborn, Engineer, Smith -Architecti Prior First Torian Regiment
