A geologists guide: Plures Cavernae

Post by revenant » January 23rd, 2019, 9:40 am

Is it the glittering gold? The allure of spelunking? Or many the thought of uncovering hidden resources? Whatever the motivation, I am here to unveil the mysteries of geology within Eden and open your eyes to the exciting system set forth.

Mining - for those of you familiar with mining in other UO realms, forget most of what you know. The typical use of a mining pick on a cave floor or along the edge of a mountain will get you somewhere, just not very far.

Mining in Requiem is a harvesting skill that requires no other skill, but directly supports Blacksmithing (https://www.13thrones.com/skills/blacksmith.htm) - the skill needed to turn raw ore into ingots and alloys and Alchemy (https://www.13thrones.com/skills/agriculture.htm) - the skill needed to turn raw gems into powders for use in other trades. Furthermore, mining is the way in which the citizens of this land are able to harvest resource nodes as seen below.

Resource nodes are accessed by first equipping the relevant tool (in this case a pickaxe) and then directly using the node (i.e. double clicking on it). Different nodes require varying levels of skill and yield raw resources in higher quantities than simply traditional mining practices.

Knowing what you are digging - Geological Studies (https://www.13thrones.com/abilities/geo ... tudies.htm)

These nodes can be directly inspected using the [lore command if you have purchased the Geological Studies Perk. The perk reveals primary, secondary, and tertiary resources available on the resource node. In practice it looks like this:

Things like heavy stone can be further mined to yield additional resources such as coal. The caverns beneath the surface world are replete with resources such as these and are unique to certain patches of the underworld, in other words just some spots might yield pig iron while others might yield diamonds, it is up to you to find and chart these areas.

Harvesting - (https://www.13thrones.com/abilities/har ... ology).htm)
Harvesting Perks directly correlate to the geologist's ability to pull rare resources from geology nodes.
In practice, this allows for obtaining more ore and, in some cases, rarer gemstones or components from the rocks directly. The different levels increase the likelihood of these rare finds.

It is highly recommended that serious geologists and miners take the full spectrum of these if they are hunting for things other than ore.

Prospecting - The means by which geologists are able to find and determine the quantities of resource nodes within a region. For this, you will need to see your local engineer for a spy glass. This ability is enabled by the command [geology. When coupled with advanced detection, the usable resource nodes are highlighted in a way that makes finding them far easier as seen in the image.

Getting started. Mining through geology is fairly simple to train. It requires a pickaxe and a strong back. The skill directly uses stamina when harvesting resource nodes at a rate that decreases with increased skill (i.e. at 100 skill it takes about 1 stamina per swing whereas at 25 skill it might take 5-6).

Advanced geology tips: The surface world and the subsurface world correlate to each other square by square. It is possible to travel the deep and emerge at different locations around the First Province. It is also possible to drop mine shafts to the world below. Items such as the diving rod (made by carpenters) are essential tools to understanding where mineshafts can be placed.

Words of caution: Cave-ins do happen. Underground resource nodes respawn approximately in 30 day intervals. The staff has been extremely forgiving with players not properly preparing to dig themselves out of a cave in. I don't think this will continue to happen, i.e. players will be stuck and left to starve if they don't bring enough pickaxes. Cave-ins can be prevented by using a mine support kit made by engineers. The item simply unfolds and delays respawn.
