The Spark
The travel through the Rumbling Pass had been uneventful; aside from the usual harassment from the bureaucracy. He had dreaded his interactions with the cattle that stepped through the line, content to be passive as they lived their lives. He had also been sure to play their game; a friendly smile on his otherwise plain-looking face. Without a second glance he had been waved through.
Some weeks had passed and his hunger had grown, a manifestation of the power he sought to consume. It had started as a little pang, like that felt in the early morning after too early a supper and too long a slumber. This hunger, however, was not simply a physical thing; it was a yearning within the very depths of his soul, an unrequited need that begged to be addressed.
This was his challenge, he did not know what would sate this desire. He had tasted many physical things; things he would never have dreamed consuming in his quest to abate the hunger. He had found respite in some for a time, only to find the hunger had grown not long after. He had tried to feed his mind with books and knowledge, these too also only seemed to grow the need. He had busied himself as a laborer hoping his quest against idleness would find success.
Yet there was still no abatement. Until he spoke those words, the principatus, in a meaningful, albeit almost benign, manner. The world around him seemed to react to his being, embracing him into a fold that he had never known, but must have always longed for. It was simply a spark brought to being by knowledge and will, but that spark seemed to drive at something deeper. He had found the source of his hunger and the only thing that would satisfy it.
