The Vigilant Flame

The locomotive hisses loudly as it finally comes to a halt at the Rumbling Pass train-yards. A tall man carrying a large box quickly makes his way to loudly welcome the passengers. This Salesman of Salvation is dressed in all black clothing, and on his head he wears a signatory tall hat. "Fear the fallen First Province, fellow Faithful, for its lands are filled with the scourge of Afflicted and Apostate both!" His warning words are loud, hoping to catch the attention of anyone who would listen. "Do not journey within unprepared, for with Faith comes Salvation! Allow the Archangel to protect your journey!"

Anyone stopping to take a proper gander at him will quickly find themselves blessed with a prayer. "Flamma qui es in corde meo, tua lux reversa est..." He preaches with passion and then offers a book from his crate. It is a thin, leather bound black book. "The Vigilant Flame will help you keep the One True God close and the Ill at bay." The preacher will not ask for anything in return, but instead departs with a cryptic warning. "The Province has fallen to darkness... no mortal law reigns there, only the Archangel's justice." He quickly continues forward to offer his religious scribblings to anyone else interested.

Someone knowledgeable might make a connection from the name printed under the book's title. Not all have eagerly accepted the Church's new policies regarding the end of Witchkin Purge. Some would still see Witchcraft as Apostasy. Such zealots work with passion to educate the public about what an affront to Decus sorcery is - and this book was published by the Vigil, an alliance of organizations known to actively seek to sway the hearts and minds of Faithful against that which they consider High Heresy. The preacher in black was no doubt an Apostate Hunter of the Black Wolves. This group of zealots is known to spearhead the Vigil's march into the Quarantine Zone, but it would seem that their battle is not only fought in flesh and blood, but also within the hearts of Decusians.
