Caught a thief? Sentenced to death. A heretic? Death. A murderer? You've got it, death. There are not a lot of punishment options other than just killing someone to make sure it doesn't happen again. If a thief and a murderer have the same punishment, what's to stop a thief from offing any witnesses?

Introducing the Hip New idea of, Jail! Basically, if found guilty, an option would to be to Jail the individual in an otherwise inaccessible area. The individual is provided with and tools they need to gather, (Pickaxes, sickles, hatchets) and have access to nodes that allow them to harvest basic materials. They get skill gain, but no infusion gain. The materials gathered go to pay reparations to the injured party, or to a general stock for sale within the fort. Amount/ time spent there required would depend on the severity of the crime. Some obvious kinks to work out but could create a realistic penalty that doesn't immediately end the character's arc. I'm sure rates of recidivism would be minor... otherwise, no one would feel bad about ridding the realm of a repeat offender.

As for trials, maybe a tribunal headed by faction leaders? Or GM's? I've even played a game where several individuals are teleported to a court for a brief trial to be the Jury.
