Perma-Death

In the world of Eden, permanent death of a character can and will happen. Whether your character has fallen to the horrors of the Torment, has been cut down by the forces of darkness and the Ill, or perhaps was slain at the hands of another player-character, there comes a time for many characters to reach their final end and be sent off to their Requiem.

The perma-death of a character results in the character being no-more; their corporeal form will be left to rot in the mortal realm while their spirit travels to what many perceive to be purgatory within a plane of existence known simply as “The Sands”. It is here, within this plane, that a character may remain for the rest of all eternity, hoping against all odds that the natural order of the universe’s metaphysics are restored within the planes of Heaven and Hell and proper expiatory purification may commence some time in the future.

For those that do not deign to spend the rest of time awaiting such a thing to occur, there is an alternative; the Songmaker. For either a small portion of one’s Invested Animus (that is, the sum total of all Animus spent towards Skills and Abilities while the character was alive) or the sacrifice of a character’s Providence, the Songmaker will happily facilitate the reincarnation of your character’s soul. Embarking on this process will re-create your character with 75% of your prior character’s Animus (or 100% if Providence ws used) as a blank slate, allowing you to create (and apply for) a brand new character of whom benefits from the prior Animus gained by your former character.

Providence

Upon experiencing a circumstance that would result in the permanent death of a character (being PDed by another character, rolling a bad Mortality save, or succumbing to the Torment), a character who possesses Providence will be spared their permanent death and enter a state of Limbo. Once expended, Providence has a chance to regenerate itself over a very long period of in-game time; how this process works, what factors may affect it, or the time in which such a feat takes is not publicly shared, as it is intended to remain a mysterious and misunderstood esoteric element of the game.

As a simple rule of thumb, however, one may safely assume that it would take no less than MANY hundreds of in-game hours to accomplish - and even then, there is no way to discern if your character may or may not have attained Providence once more - therefore, while it is possible to accomplish the feat of regenerating Providence, players must come to terms that it can sometimes be a monumental feat, and plan their characters accordingly.

Limbo

As mentioned above, if a character possesses a point of Providence upon failing or receiving a “Death Roll”, they will automatically be spared Permanent Death - this intervention will use up the instance of Providence, and for all future instances, will result in the character permanently dying.

In the event that a character’s death roll was a result of PVP (as in, a player had attempted to murder their character as opposed to failing a mortality roll), the character will additionally be placed into a state known as Limbo. While in Limbo, a character cannot be subjected to Permanent Death at the hands of another player, nor can they subject others to Permanent Death. They can however succumb to death from normal Mortality rolls or via the Torment.

Limbo status lasts for a period of sixteen real-life hours. During this time, the player will be reminded upon login, every knock-out, and periodically while playing that they are in fact in Limbo status. While at any time in Limbo status, a player may elect to utilize the [embracedeath command - using this command will allow the player to accept their fate, and will permanently kill their character, sending them to the Sands.

Of important note, by utilizing the [embracedeath command, the character will have their Providence restored upon reaching the afterlife, allowing them to reincarnate for 100% of their total, invested animus as opposed to only 75% of it - this allows for a character to avoid losing a 1/4th of their invested Animus if used before Limbo expires.

After a character’s Limbo status expires, the ability to use the [embracedeath command will no longer be active, and upon any other failed death rolls via. PvM or PvP, the character will not benefit from being able to reincarnate with their full value of Invested Animus - therefore, it is encouraged that a player familiarize themselves with this system prior to engaging in hostile actions in-game, as being subjected to a death may result in the loss of Invested Animus.

How to PD

There are three main circumstances in which a character may suffer from Permanent Death in Requiem: failing a Mortality roll, being slain by another player character or staff-played NPC, or succumbing to the Torment.

Mortality

Mortality is incurred from a few different sources. The most prevalent method of acquiring Mortality is through falling to Deadly Creatures. Deadly Creatures are NPCs whom have a chance (Deadly Chance) to inflict a point of Mortality upon your character in the event they inflict a KO. Mortality can further be acquired through other means, such as being the victim of a murder attempt, attempting to a murder another player character, triggering dungeon and player-crafted traps, and other circumstances.

Mortality expires at a rate of one point every 5 hours in game.

Every point of Mortality a character possesses is equal to a 1% chance to permanently die upon a KO. Upon reaching more than ten points of Mortality, a character will furthermore acquire the condition of being “Forsaken”, that is, upon the precipice of death’s door and abandoned by the powers above and below.

Being in the state of Forsaken is rumored to bestow peculiar and often mysterious effects upon a character. Tales exist of peculiar and oftentimes shunned pieces of knowledge that one may acquire while being Forsaken that lead to peculiar and even supernatural abilities, such as increasing one’s potential of damage, expanding one’s capabilities of knowledge, and other, even more sinister feats.

Where one may find those that would teach such knowledge, however, is anyone’s guess, for such wisdom is undoubtedly the work of the damned - yet it is surmised that the Forsaken are so close to the precipice of death that sometimes they even perceive things that others cannot, which lends many to wonder if their esoteric knowledge is passed to them not by fellow mortals, but by spirits and otherworldly creatures with intentions and motives all their own.

PvP

In the world of Requiem, strife is ever-present, and other players may seek to do you catastrophic and often fatal harm. Upon rendering a character into a Knock-Out status, an aggressor may elect to use a bladed item upon their victim’s unconscious body, or use any of the following commands and target the body directly:

  • [wound
  • [kill
  • [injure
  • [murder
  • [pd
  • [hurt
  • [maim

By doing so, the Injure/PD menu will be presented to the player. Using this menu, a character may elect to inflict an injury upon the victim, or begin the PD process if the victim is not in Limbo or protected by the new player protection granted upon character approval. When engaged, a PD attempt will take a certain amount of time, and can be interrupted at any time by moving too far away from the victim, being attacked, or other circumstances that would otherwise inhibit the concentration of the attacker.
