22nd of Frostmarch, 1347

THE PASSING OF ARCHBISHOP JOHAN LANDCASTER

On the 21st of Frostmarch, last evening at twenty-five minutes past seven o'clock, our beloved Archbishop Johan Landcaster, whose strength had gradually waned for some months since his return to Redholme, expired without the least apparent suffering at the Castrum Lucius in the 46th year of his age.

He will be remembered fondly for his great service to this Republic and his unwavering faith and conviction.

The Church has declared a week of the morning for all Provinces throughout the Republic.

BISHOP MILPHIO BRAHEUS TO SUCEED AS NEXT ARCHBISHOP

An emergency meeting of the College of Bishops was called in the early hours of the day to deliberate on the next Archbishop. The seclusion lasted all of four hours before it was officially decreed that Bishop Milphio Braheus would succeed Johan Landcaster as the next Archbishop. The vote was reportedly 4-2 in favor of the new Archbishop with Grand Inquisitor Savenko and Warbishop Naum Alexandrov abstaining due to absence.

FIRST ARCHMAGE IN OVER 5 YEARS APPOINTED

Along with the election of Bishop Braheus to succeed as Archbishop, the College of Bishops has appointed Scholasticus Hrelyo Emilov Dobrev to the position of Archmage. This appointment has come as a surprise to many as the seat has remained vacant for over half a decade. Dobrev has served amidst the ranks of the Consortium in Antograd for nearly two decades. Gaining notoriety at a young age after successfully combating and defeating a Resolvist cell upon the borders of Kaduraas.

Over the last two years, he has become a populist figure within the guild holds of the Consortium. Pushing for wider acceptance and rights for practitioners of the arcana. He is set to be traveling to Redholme to take up his seat in the coming days.

Former Archmage William Zulank, who has been missing and presumed dead since the fall of Tor, has been declared Excommunicatus by the Church proper. It is uncertain if the investigation of the Consortium’s involvement in Tor is still underway but the appointment and declaration of Excommunicatus suggests it is at its conclusion.

WESTERN FRONT: INQUISITION RECLAIMS MULDR MINE FROM BLACKLANDS

News has reached the Senate that Muldr Mine has been reclaimed by the Inquisition holding the Western Front in Teramer. The reclamation of Muldr Mine stands to be one of the most important victories in recent years in the west, as mining operations and refineries will allow for a quick, direct supply of our military forces stationed along the western front.

On the 15th of Frostmarch. Apothecary Corp, Foundry Engineers, and the Venerated Inquisition have worked to inspect and secure the site. Thorough irrigation of the tunnels and controlled flame to the surrounding area has been done to ensure the site is safe to be once again used by the Republic for iron extraction.

Muldr Mine is located in the Galehorn Mountain Range and was previously lost in the initial outbreak of Torment in 1313. Grand Inquisitor Savenko has credited the victory to the news reaching Aleksandrov of Warbishop Naum Alexandrov being formally reinstated in his position as Warbishop. Which by his account, galvanized war-weary Inquisitors into pushing the blight of Torment back further than it has been in years.

REBEL ROUND UP: ANTI-DECUSIAN SYMPATHIZERS ARRESTED NATIONWIDE

A slew of arrests and sentencing of Forlorn Hope sympathizers and associates has been conducted nationwide over the last week:

Port of Dwindain, Yultac - The entire editorial staff of the city news publication, The Portsman, was arrested for publishing sentiments advocating the dismantling of private Citizen-owned property and the Church. Their sentencing is pending trial.

Coquelicot, Heston - After weeks of investigation, Gendarmerie raided and arrested a group of 35 factory workers at a large textile mill on the city outskirts. Workers were discovered secretly meeting after hours in the company warehouse to plot a violent upheaval against factory owner Marius Pelerius of Parish Pelerius. Of the 35 insurgents discovered, 12 were killed on the scene in attempts to attack the Gendarmerie upon discovery. For the 23 remaining insurgents, their sentencing is pending trial.

Redholme City, Redholme - Extremists have been identified within the Church itself including Themestius Falx, a prominent scholar within the Circle of Illumination. After a trial lasting three days, the Senate Council on Decusian Subversion ruled Falx an enemy of the State and carried out sentencing on the 17th of Frostmarch. Afterward, the College of Bishops was quick to convene to pass an emergency Addendum to the Inconcessus Accords of 1347 A.S on the 19th of Frostmarch, classifying all previous publications from Falx as unlawful to possess. Before departing for their winter recess, the Senate Council on Decusian Subversion declared that there would be no let-up in the coming year on their inquiries.

As the Council adjourned, Vicar Aldo Metellus had this to say, “It has been made clear in these recent weeks that good Decusians everywhere are now forced to face a new battlefront - the one for their very souls. Those we once saw as friends and neighbors reveal themselves as pretenders who would seek to dismantle our most Holy Republic and tear us away from the One True God.”

WINTER STORM MOVES ACCROSS VITAVEUS

A severe winter storm caused chaos from coast to coast last week. Territories throughout the Republic shared similar stories of being buried beneath anywhere from several inches to a few feet of snow and ice. Northern Vitaveus got the brunt of the winter storm. Alexandrov, Teramer dug themselves out of four to six feet of snow. All seafaring travel from Yultac was closed as piers were completely frozen over.

In the Midlands, areas along the Angelspire Traverse saw more than four feet of snow. Heavy snow, winds, and rain in Ghaenthgrand brought dangerous traveling conditions along the Great Road, which resulted in Foundry officials restricting parts of the highway to carriages with sled troughs after multiple spinouts. Nearly 60-mile-per-hour winds in Ostenam banked multiple shipping boats along the Goodsea. In Virrenul torrential rain caused rivers to swell; local Foundry worked to shore up rivers to prevent further flooding.

While the west has seen the brunt of heavy snowfall, the east has been hammered with its first major snow in the season. Icy road conditions caused at least seven multiple carriage wrecks in Prosus, Athaerun resulting in Foundry limiting the number of vehicles traveling along pedestrian roads. In the city of Redholme, high winds brought multiple powerlines to crash down upon or near residential areas; residents were encouraged to stay inside until Foundry crews can ensure their safety.

The winter storm continued to push east bringing rain, snow, and blizzard-like conditions throughout Vitaveus.

PROFESSOR TWADDLE'S BIRD OF THE WEEK:

A rather curious specimen will occupy this week's article: the Dryocopus maculans, a species that is believed to share a remarkable heritage with the Woodpecker genus (Twaddle's Articles and Histories of Aerial Mice, p. 307). Quite a common sighting in Sulastas as they greatly favor Kapok trees for nesting purposes, this modest bird presents an average length of 8 inches and a wingspan of no more than 10. Nothing is remarkable regarding the animal's coloring, ranging from light brown to pitch black, with occasional white spots covering most of the dorsal fluff in juveniles and adults.

The focus on this subject is due to the stunning behavioral crossover very common in the Insecta class: the ocellus mimicry, or, in layman's terms, an eye-like marking. I did classify this as behavioral because Dryocopus sp. shows a clear awareness of these false eyes positioned orthogonally to the actual visual organs, these being much less attractive than the inert ones. Such individuals will constantly swivel their oblong heads in an attempt to confuse potential predators as to the direction the animal is actually facing, thus increasing the favorable outcome of an eventual encounter with their natural enemies.

A female lays five eggs on average on each mating cycle, and their use for cookery is limited due to the yolk's strong metallic taste. Dryocopus sp. tends to favor earthworms and caterpillars mostly, though they'll indulge in hanging fruits from time to time.
